Glossary         Amp  The measure of current in a circuit.    Bar  A horizontal metal tube, suspended above the stage, onto which luminaires are fixed with hook clamps.   Barndoor  Hinged metal flaps on the front of a Fresnel or PC spotlight to adjust the edge of the beam.   Batten A group of floodlight units mounted in a single row   Beam angle The angle (in degrees) used to calculate the diameter of the spot for a given throw distance.   Beamlight A luminaire which creates a very narrow-angle beam of light.    Channel  The control path from the desk to the dimmer.   Circuit  The electrical path from the dimmer to the luminaire.   CID  A type of discharge lamp.   CSI  A type of discharge lamp.   Cyclorama The rear wall or backcloth of the stage.   Dimmer  The part of a lighting system which controls the power to the lamp.   Field Angle  The angle of the beam at the point where the intensity drops to 10% of the peak value.   Floodlight  A luminaire which produces a wide beam of light   Focus  To adjust the direction, beam angle, sharpness and shape of a beam of light.   FOH Front Of House, or in front of the proscenium arch.   Follow spot  A spotlight which is specially designed for continuous movement.   Fresnel spot A spotlight with a Fresnel lens giving a soft, even beam of light for general on-stage lighting of the acting area.   Gate  The internal part of a profile spotlight where the beam of light focuses.    Gel  Jargon term for colour filter. Origin: Gelatine.   Gobo A thin disc of stainless steel with a pattern of holes which is inserted in the gate of a profile spot to project the pattern onto the stage.    Groundrow  A batten of floodlights on the stage floor to illuminate a backcloth from below.   HMI  A type of discharge lamp.   Hookclamp  A hook-shaped clamp which suspends a luminaire from a bar.   Iris diaphragm  An adjustable diameter hole which fits the gate of a profile spot to alter the beam angle.   Kilowatt (kW)  One thousand Watts.    Lamp  A glass-encapsulated source of light which may be either a filament lamp or a discharge lamp.   Lantern  The original stage term for a luminaire.    MSD, MSR  Types of discharge lamp   Pan  To move a spotlight in the horizontal plane   Par can A simple luminaire which houses a Par 56 or 64 sealed-beam lamp.   Par lamp A sealed-beam lamp which includes a reflector and lens.   Pebble-convex lens  A basic PC lens where the flat surface which is dimpled to diffuse the sharp edge of the beam and to blur the projected filament.   Profile spot  A spotlight which can accurately project any pattern or shape placed in the gate.   Rig  The lighting installation.   Safety bond A strong cable which prevents a luminaire falling if the suspension point fails.   Safety chain  A strong link chain which prevents a luminaire falling if the suspension point fails.   Set The stage dressing for a scene, comprising scenery, props, practicals, borders and backcloths.   Shutters Thin metal plates which fit into the gate of a profile spotlight to obscure part of the beam.   Spigot  A stumpy rod which fixes to the stirrup of a followspot so it can be fitted into a telescopic stand   Spill   Unwanted light that comes from the edge of a beam.   Spotlight  A general term for a luminaire with a lens.   Stirrup  The U-shaped metal support of a luminaire.   Throw  The distance from the luminaire to the stage.   Tilt  Movement of the luminaire in the vertical plane.   Tungsten-halogen  Modern filament lamps using a tungsten filament in a quartz glass envelope containing an inert halogen gas.   Volt The measure of an electrical potential.    Watt The measure of electric power.   Working Lights  Special lighting circuits which are switched on between scenes to allow the stage-crew to set the next scene.   Zoom  An optical system used in many profile and followspots to concentrate all the light into the chosen beam diameter.   home page    company    products    news    publications    distributors LDR - Luci della Ribalta - Via Berna 14, z.i.
